The Hidden Impact of Caring

Professional Learning Webinar

29th January 2027

For more than a decade, Dr Adam Fraser and his team have researched educator wellbeing across Australia. Through this work, they identified a significant yet often overlooked challenge facing the profession: Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). STS occurs when people are repeatedly exposed to the trauma, distress and adversity of others. While educators are committed to supporting young people, many carry the emotional impact of the situations they encounter every day.

To better understand this issue, Dr Fraser led the largest Australian study of Secondary Traumatic Stress in educators. The research involved 2,285 educators, more than 1,000 personal stories and 107 in-depth interviews, resulting in the landmark report, The Silent Cost. The findings revealed that STS is affecting educators across all sectors and roles. Importantly, the research also identified practical strategies that help reduce its impact and support long-term wellbeing and effectiveness.

In this practical professional learning event, participants will explore:

  • What Secondary Traumatic Stress is and why it matters in education

  • Key findings from Australia's largest study of STS in educators

  • The relationship between STS, burnout and compassion fatigue

  • Why some educators remain healthy and effective despite high exposure to trauma

  • The habits and practices used by the "Diamonds" identified in the research

  • Practical strategies for individuals to reduce the impact of STS

  • How colleagues can better support one another

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of this critical wellbeing challenge and practical tools to protect themselves, support others and continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of students.
